אַרְבַּע מִדּוֹת בְּהוֹלְכֵי לְבֵית הַמִּדְרָשׁ. הוֹלֵךְ וְאֵינוֹ עוֹשֶׂה, שְׂכַר הֲלִיכָה בְיָדוֹ. עוֹשֶׂה וְאֵינוֹ הוֹלֵךְ, שְׂכַר מַעֲשֶׂה בְיָדוֹ. הוֹלֵךְ וְעוֹשֶׂה, חָסִיד. לֹא הוֹלֵךְ וְלֹא עוֹשֶׂה, רָשָׁע:
Existem quatro meios para ir à casa de estudo: ir mas não fazer [isto é, ir à casa de estudo para ouvir, mas não revendo seu aprendizado e não entendendo] —a recompensa de ir está em sua mão; fazendo [isto é, aprendendo e revisando em seu estudo em casa], mas não indo—a recompensa de fazer está em sua mão; indo e fazendo—um chasid; não indo e não fazendo— um perverso.

1) First of all, one is rewarded for going to the synagogue in itself, as we find in Avoth 5:14: "There are four characteristics of those who go to the synagogue: If he goes and does not do [i.e., pray, (because of some accident)], he has the reward of going." And the reward is according to the number of steps. The more steps, the more reward (see Sotah 22a).
